ST ANSELM'S College, Birkenhead, took the overall title at the Northern Schools' Cross Country Championships at Heaton Park, Manchester, winning the Roses competition by virtue of having the lowest aggregate points score through all the age groups.

In the Under-12 race, Rory Smith (St Anselm's) became individual champion, although Calday Grammar took the team prize with three counters in the first 10 places - Richard McColl (3rd), Trevor Merrick (4th) and Ian Pevell (9th). Making up the team was Matthew Strange (23rd) to give Calday 39 points, 40 less than the second placed team.

In the Under-13 race (Year 8), Mark Weston (St Anselm's) came second. The St Anselm's team were also in the runners-up spot, behind the winning West Derby team.

Tim Holsgrove (St Anselm's) was first in the Under-14 race and led his team to victory.

In the Senior Boys' race, Chris Lindesay (Calday Grammar) was highest placed local athlete in third position with Stuart Mason (St Anselm's) 11th.
