NICKI Smith, of Plessington High School, won the girls' race at the Wirral Schools' Year 7 annual Cross Country Championships at Arrowe Park.

Second was Annemika Van der Pauw (West Kirby), followed by Caroline Cotton (Weatherhead), third, Ella Bowen, fourth, and Vicki McConnell (both Weatherhead), fifth.

Team places: 1, West Kirby; 2, Weatherhead; 3, Woodchurch.

The Boys' race was won by Rory Smith (St Anselm's), followed by Calday runners Trevor Merrick (Calday) second, Matthew Strange, third, Ian Revell, fourth, and Bobby Home, fifth. This good packing gave Calday victory in the team race, with St Anselm's second and Wirral Grammar third.

The second meeting of the Midland Bank Short Course Cross Country League was held alongside these championships. Lindsay Doyle (West Kirby) was again winner of the Under-18 Girls' race, while Gareth Pritchard (Wirral Grammar) was second time winner of the Year 8 boys' race.
