VAUXHALL MOTORS employee John Payne (right) communicates with deaf employees after passing stage three exams in British sign language. Here, he sorts some instructions out with crane driver John Smith using sign language.

Mr Payne, an electrician in the body unit plant, is no stranger to deafness. His father was deaf and without speech.

Vauxhall helped John with his exam fees through the company's Tuition Refund Scheme.
