MEMBERS of Clatterbridge Hospital League of Friends have been praised for their commitment, dedication and enthusiasm by the judges of a top national award

Judges from the Huntleigh Sapphire Awards, which identify excellence in voluntary servioce to patients, visited the hospital to learn about the League and its involvement in The Dove Appeal.

The League was one of 20 shortlisted for the award, run by the National Association of Leagues of Hospital Friends, with four winners announced next month.

The Dove Appeal aims to raise £85,000 to build a much-needed new multi-denominational chapel at the hospital. Developments at Clatterbridge have left the current chapel remote from hospital buildings.

The League is helping to raise the money in collaboration with the trust. The League hosted a highly successful Gala Concert at the Liverpool Philharmonic earlier this month. Around £25,000 has been raised so far.

One of the judges, Peter Green, said: "I am very impressed. The League has demonstrated a great deal of drive and enthusiasm for the Dove Appeal and its other fundraising activities.

"So much work by Leagues of Friends goes without public recognition, but the Dove Appeal is something the whole community can get involved in. It seems a very worthwhile cause. I am looking for imagination, innovation and enthusiasm and I've seen plenty of that here."

Philip Owen, Chairman of Clatterbridge Hospital League of Friends, said: "We are delighted to have been shortlisted and we've been given great encouragement as a result of the visit by the judges today.

"To be recognised in this way is a compliment to everyone who has been involved in the Dove Appeal."

The judging panel, which includes agony aunt Claire Rayner and Alan Langlands, of the NHS, makes its final decision in mid-April. The four winners will be announced at a ceremony at Claridge's in London.
