TORIES are to put up Les Byrom as their candidate for Wirral South in the General Election. The Conservatives lost Wirral to Labour's Ben Chapman in the recent by-election, caused by the death of Conservative MP Barry Porter.

Mr Chapman, who lives in Heswall, defeated Mr Byrom in the by-election but Les says: "The by-election was a cul-de-sac. We had to go down and come back but the lasting fight will be the General Election."

The official adoption meeting is at Thornton Hough Village Hall on Friday. But Ben has already told voters and the Prime Minister that he intends to remain MP for Wirral South, after turning a Conservative majority of 8,000 into a Labour one of 7,888.

In his maiden speech, Ben said: "The Prime Minister advised me not to unpack my bags. Well, they are unpacked. I intend to be around for some years!"
