WORKERS at closure-threatened Tulip cooked meat factory are marching to 'save their bacon' and 450 jobs.

They ask the people of Wallasey to support them as they march and campaign to stop the factories at New Brighton and Moreton from closing.

Earlier this week, Tulip workers marched in support of Spillers' employees, as their factory closes in the New Year due to a decline in the pet food market.

Tulip workers highlight, with pride, their record as loyal and hard-working employees, many having been with Tulip since Jaka Foods came to New Brighton 25 years ago.

They feel betrayed by Tulip management, which wants to switch to a greenfield site in Wellingborough, Northants. Tulip locally supply foods for Marks and Spencer.

The march starts from Birkenhead Park, on Saturday, October 4, and goes through Birkenhead town centre.

Meanwhile, students from Withens Lane College, Liscard, had a mock signing-on session for the new term to highlight the closure of the Wirral Met College complex.

The campaign to save the college mourns the ending of further education on a major site in Wallasey after 100 years to be replaced by smaller 'neigbourhood colleges' offering limited courses. They expect plans to build homes on the Withens Lane site to be debated early October by Wirral Council, following objections.

Trade has also been hit in Liscard because of major investment in Birkenhead as Wirral's main shopping centre, while trade in Seacombe, Poulton and other parts of Wallasey have suffered as a result of the long-term closure of the Four Bridges.
