CALDAY Grange Grammar School pupil Richard Fletcher has scooped a top writers' prize in this year's Commonwealth essay competition.

Richard's Class B special prize is awarded to an entrant who has overcome a disability in order to submit an entry. Richard won his prize following a considerable amount of time spent in hospital undergoing extensive chemotherapy.

Over 4,500 entries, from 887 local schools in 51 Commonwealth countries and territories were selected from local rounds for submission to the international examiners.

Richard, aged 18, wins £40 cash and books to the value of £15, for his work on the topic: "Would you want to live forever?"
