EASTHAM Councillor Tom Harney, a retired teacher, says he is to take the local authority to task over its advertisement for a Director of Education on a salary of between £57,489 and £63,228. Wirral N.U.T. agrees.
"There is almost no mention of education in it," says the Lib Dem councillor commenting on the advert in the national press.
The advert says Wirral is the eighth largest metropolitan council and has achieved several things. "However, the authority has exciting projects on literacy and they are not mentioned. What on earth is a potential applicant to make of all this?"
The closing date for applications in October 3, as the present Director of Education, David Rigby, retires on March 31, 1998. Several other senior officers are due to retire shortly, Finance Director Dave Rollins officially retires on October 31, Housing Director John Agass in March 1998, when the contracts of Chief Executive Alan White and Property Services Director Ivan Johnston are also due to expire.
