WALLASEY has become 'almost an island' because of more major roadworks linking the town with the rest of Wirral.

Roadworks started this week on the main route into Wallasey at Junction One, M53, Bidston Moss Viaduct, causing rush hour chaos into and out of Wallasey. The junction is already busy because of the continued closure of the cross dock link with Birkenhead at the Four Bridges.

Much of Wallasey is now becoming congested as morning and teatime drivers try to avoid jams and cross at Duke Street, which further adds to the long queue at Poulton Road traffic lights.

Highways Agency area manager David Bogle said: "Roadworks are essential to maintain a safe road surface on Bidston Moss Viaduct.

"A combination of a contraflow, slip road closures and signed diversions will operate. Drivers are asked to take extra care along this section of motorway until October 17."

Railusers, too, on the Wallasey and New Brighton line face disruption from October 4 because of work on the new Conway Park railway station in Birkenhead.

'Almost an Island,' by Wallasey author Noel Smith, tells how historically Wallasey is cut off from the rest of Wirral by water and Bidston Moss.
