NO SMOKING! That's official policy now at Wirral's main Arrowe Park Hospital. The Catch 22 sight of patients having a puff in their bedwear, outside the entrance, greets visitors and staff alike.

Wirral Hospital is reinforcing its anti-smoking policy by banning smoking, except for two internal 'sin bins.' These will be the only two areas in the hospital where patients, staff and visitors can smoke, from the end of October. The undercover smoking areas are at the rear of the Duchess of Westminster Wing (the women's unit) and in the main building, near outpatients.

A survey revealed that many people objected to cigarette ends being discarded on the ground or to having to breathe in smoke as they walked into the hospital. They also felt the sight of smokers outside was both undignified and gave a bad first impression of the hospital.

Anyone found smoking elsewhere will be asked to leave the hospital and its grounds.
