EASTHAM Councillor Phil Gilchrist warns that no-one can afford to be complacent over planes being in a near-miss over Wirral.

An incident has just come to light, a near miss in January 1996, near Wirral, over the Irish Sea.

Two British operated passenger planes were shuttling between Belfast and the mainland - one going to Manchester, the other coming from East Midlands Airport.

The west bound pilot spotted the other plane a few hundred yards metres away and about 700ft below him.

Mistakenly thinking they were on a collision course, he dipped sharply. His plane dropped 1,000ft in a few seconds, crossing the other plane's flightpath less than 12 seconds after it had gone by.

Coun GIlchrist, whose Eastham Ward is also under Liverpool Airport's flight path, warns no one can be complacent over aircraft near misses, especially as there are many factories and homes in the Bebington, Eastham and Bromborough areas. The public needs re-assuring.
