MAYOR of Wirral Barney Gilfoyle congratulates the Wirral Globe on its 24th birthday in a special message to the Editor...

"Wirral Council is also approaching its 24th year, during which time it has maintained a close working relationship with the Wirral Globe. Long may this flourish and the newspaper go from strength to strength." - Mayor's Parlour, Town Hall, Wallasey.

Nearly a quarter of a century ago, local government re-organisation formed one metropolitan borough, created one corporate identity serving 350,000 people who previously had their own town council. A time of great change and challenge.

In the newspaper world, something equally dramatic happened with the launch of the Wirral Sun, which soon became the Wirral Globe. A free newspaper for every home, a first for the region, a lead that other local papers would be forced to follow.

Since then, the Wirral Globe has remained market leader, as just confirmed by a N.O.P. media poll. We continue to develop, for our silver anniversary and then the Millennium.

It is not the Globe's style to proclaim, every edition, how wonderful we are, for it is our readers and advertisers who are to be thanked.

Over 24 years, the Globe's staff have built up special relationships with them. We look forward to the future. We are very proud of our community work, resulting in three national awards.

We do not claim to be 144 years old, but a young, enthusiastic 24-year-old tuned into the changing needs of Wirral. And, we don't forget our older readers, either. Our World War II plaques and the return of the old Birkenhead Market Clock are just two timely reminders.

We thank Mr Mayor for his birthday greetings and reciprocate. Through our separate editions we plan to maintain a close working relationship with the people of Wirral, help them flourish, and go from strength to strength. And now the Globe is on the Net, we go worldwide!
