THE Young Engineers Club from Birkenhead Sixth Form College, competed against over 900 clubs from across the UK and came third in the Young Engineers Club of the Year Awards, at the Commonwealth Conference, London, and win a trophy, a state-of-the-art Personal Computer and a VIP trip to a BT research laboratory.
Emma Robinson (18), Mark Joyson (17) and Stuart Hatton (17) represented the club during the competition in London, presenting their selected project, an ingenious new design for a bumper on a Ford Escort. The design incorporates two bumpers in one, a low speed bumper and a high speed bumper. The high speed bumper appears at speeds above 40mph and acts to increase safety and economy by effectively using aerodynamics.
The design has been so successful that the team have been invited to present to a senior board at Ford and are hoping that the design will be implemented for the new Millennium.
