A 46-YEAR-OLD man threatened a Birkenhead neighbour with a knife because he believed she was responsible for spreading rumours about him, Wirral magistrates were told.

Michael Owens, now staying at Kendal Road, Seacombe, admitted possessing a seven-and-a-half inch bladed bread knife without authority or excuse at Oxton. The prosecution did not pursue a second matter alleging he used threatening behaviour with intent to cause Meryl Deer harassment, alarm or distress.

Peter Frost, prosecuting, said Owens brandished the knife at Deer in the garden of her home and threatened to use it on her. When later seen he commented: "I know I shouldn't have had it but everything got to me."

Anna Duke, defending, said Owens was frustrated over the rumours and acted at a time when a combination of drink and anger overtook him.

He was conditionally discharged for two years on payment of £45 costs and the knife was forfeited.
