RINGSIDE REPORT by John Smurthwaite

TWO of Willaston ABC's young fighters boxed on the Maelor ABC Show.

Schoolboy Jamie Bateman boxed Burton ABC's Steven Hall, who had won nine out of his previous 11 fights.

Jamie took the first round with his sharp south paw jabs setting problems for Steve. In the second and third rounds, Steven solved the problems set for him in the first by counter punching and switch hitting to head and body to be good value for a unanimous points win.

Junior Mark Bramhall scored his first win with a points victory over Caernarvon's David Jones. Mark took command from the first bell, drawing the lead and slipping the jab to score freely with both hands to head and body.

Mark continued with these tactics over the three two minute rounds, but occasionally strayed south of the border with body shots. Mark received a decisive unanimous points verdict.

Two further victories were recorded by Willaston boxers at the Centurians ABC Show at Tyldesly Labour Club.

James Oliver boxed Centurians Mark Julian for the fifth time with the score 3-1 in James' favour.

James came out fast as usual to have Mark under severe pressure with fast, two-handed flurries. The referee intervened to administer a standing eight count. James continued in this vein during the second round and brave as Mark was his case seemed futile.

The third round saw James pitching and Mark catching for James to receive a resounding points decision.

Jamie Bateman, boxing Ashton's Tony Delaney, took control in the first round with fast counter punching, principally with the jab. In round two, Jamie started crossing with the Southpaw left cross and varying the tactic with the occasional body shot.

He maintained the initiative in the final round with aggressive boxing, firing from both hands to score a unanimous points decision.
