PUPILS from Wirral schools turned in some fine performances when the Great Britain Catholic Schools' Cross Country Championships were held at Wavertree, Liverpool.

Best performance of the day, not surprisingly, came from in-form Rory Smith, who despite being a year under age won the Under-14 race. Rory, a pupil at St Anselm's College, Birkenhead, led his school team to victory in the team event. He was supported by Mark Watson, Gareth Benson, Paul Devlin and Chris Ellis.

St Anselm's also won the Under-16 and Under-19 races, although overall representation wasn't so strong in the age groups. Good packing brought them victory in the Under-16 race. First home for St Anselm's was Stephen Edwards (4th), just outside an individual medal place. He was followed by Stephen McCain (5th), John Rowland (6th), Robbie Allcock (8th) and David Davies (16th). In the Girls' Year Seven race, Gemma Evans, of Plessington High School, finished with a bronze medal. Rebecca Davis (Upton) was fourth.
