WIRRAL Athletic Club was represented by a small contingent when the first race of the North West Women's Cross Country League was held at Woodbank Park, Stockport.

Going up the age groups, Wirral's only representative in the Under-13 race, Nicki Smith, finished in 23rd place, while in the Under-20 race Rebecca Lindesay finished a promising fourth, with Ellie Yavari 15th and Jennie Alison 30th.

For the ladies, Julie Harris was first home in 34th place, with Liz Danson not far behind in 40th. They were supported by Judy Tinsley (63rd), Leflon Cooper (72nd), Eslyn Walker (77th), Sue Lawson (83rd), Maria Wright (90th) and Maureen Cooper (97th).

The Liverpool and District Cross Country League also began with the first race at Clarke Garden, Allerton, Liverpool.

For the Under-13s, Ian Revell was third for Wirral AC with Matthew Strange just behind in fourth. With support from Kris Gorbet and Bobby Home, Wirral AC claimed second team spot with 25 points, behind Liverpool Harriers (21).

Wirral AC's Under-15 team shared the honours with Liverpool Harriers, both teams finishing with 27 points. Individually, David Yarwood (4th) was Wirral's first finisher, closely followed by David Byrne (5th), David Milne (8th) and Michael Rose (10th).

Wirral had no team in the Under-17 race, but individually Ian Tinsley was third and Julian Gorbet fourth.

The Senior Men's team finished in third place behind Liverpool Harriers. First up for Wirral was Paul Howarth. Returning from University, he finished an encouraging third, supported by Pete Kilgallon (22nd), Tony Devoy (24th), Mario Foschi (36th), Chris Bayliss (60th) and John Peerless (65th).

Wirral AC Veterans have had some good results, notably at the Vets 5km British Championships. The Wirral AC M40 team finished second with team members Pete Kilgallon (9th), Tony Devoy (11th), Tony McDevitt (16th, 2nd M45) and Mario Foschi (28th).

On the same day, the Northern Vets held their 10 mile Championships at Warrington. Wirral's Andy Beckett came second. The M40 team, which also comprised Gordon Schofield and Colin Sinnott, took runners-up spot.
