Carlsberg West Cheshire League round-up with Ray Condliffe

A SUPERB display by second division New Brighton earned them a shock 3-2 Cheshire Amateur Cup fourth round success, on Saturday, at Division One title hopefuls Shell. Phil Parkhill, Robbie Gerrard and Mark Horrigan netted the goals which sends them into the last eight.

Lloyd Oldfield and Ian Wilkinson netted for a Shell side who had been reinstated into the competition after a third round defeat at the hands of Christleton.

Poulton Victoria went to the top of the table in midweek, with goals from Ian Doran and Simon Lewis in a 2-2 draw with a strong Vauxhall side who replied through Gary Washington and Kenny Berry.

On Saturday, a single second-half strike by Nicky Dillon was enough for Vics to see off battling Merseyside Police, who themselves had reached the final of the Lancashire Amateur Cup three days earlier with a 2-1 win over Southport Trinity.

Second placed Ashville edged out Vauxhall 2-1 when an Andy Robinson penalty proved to be a second period winner after Graham Ellison had wiped out a Barry Ellison opener for the Motormen.

There were hat-tricks for Steve Hilditch and Dominic Barrett as Heswall thrashed Bromborough Pool 8-1, while Cammell Laird were held to a goalless draw at Capenhurst.

Mersey Royal, with Tony Lucas, 2, and John Thompson on target, scored three goals for the first time this season - but still went down to a 5-3 defeat at Mond Rangers (Paul Dwyer, Karl Thomas, Dave Williams, Gary Harkin and Dave Pitt).

Despite taking a first-half lead through Paul Walley, title chasers Stork had to settle for a point from their encounter with visiting Blacon YC (Paul Finch), while Moreton lost 6-0 at Christleton, who had hat-trick hero Ian Jones, Colin Read, Adrian Tydd and Dave Tills on target.

The top two in Division Two were both held to a 1-1 draw. Stork Reserves (Ben McHugh) drew with Shell Reserves (Brian Coombes).

Colin Hawitt scored for Poulton Vics Reserves, with Cammell Laird replying through new boy Gavin Evans. Old warhorse Ken Gore struck twice for Heswall Reserves as they saw off Bromborough Pool Reserves 2-0, while Ashville Reserves moved up to fourth spot with Dave McDermott and Nick Welton registering in a 2-0 win.

Manor Athletic suffered a 10-1 thrashing at rampant General Chemicals, for whom Peter Houghton was a hat-trick star.
