Wirral Rugby Union round-up by ANDREW STRATTON

BIRKENHEAD Park failed to take their chances against West Park in a re-arranged Thwaites North West League Division One clash and lost 3-23.

Their only reward was a penalty by Greg Cann.

Wirral put up a bold showing in a club clash at Chester before losing 13-17, a penalty try proving decisive for the home outfit. Tony Higgins and Andy McKinney had tries for Wirral and McKinney a penalty.

Hoylake beat a much changed Wallasey side 13-10, with Max Williams kicking two penalties and converting a try by Jay Baldock. Colin Kirby gained a try, conversion and a penalty for the losers.

Port Sunlight accounted for Anselmians in an ill tempered derby in which both sides had a player sent-off. Steve Cooke, 2, and Ross Lewis went over for Sunlight and John Loxam goaled twice and kicked a penalty. Andy Power and Andy Marshall went in for Anselmians, Tony Neville goaling each time and kicking two penalties, but the referee halted the play a few minutes early with Sunlight 22-20 to the good.

Prenton found Southport too strong and lost 12-38. Craig Elkerton and Mark Peers crossed and Peers goaled once.

Oldershaw, Caldy and Parkonians did not play.

League action this Saturday shows Birkenhead Park away to Vagabonds, Isle of Man, and Oldershaw at Penrith in North West One. Caldy journey to Fleetwood in North West Two.

Lower down the scale, matches include Wirral v Newton-le-Willows, Anselmians v Ruskin Park, Sefton v Parkonians, Wallasey v Congleton, Prenton v Helsby, Douglas Isle of Man v Port Sunlight and Collegiate v Hoylake.
