MOTORISTS planning a European motoring holiday or a short trip overseas should make sure they are fully prepared for the journey, says the AA.

CAR AND EQUIPMENT

1 Have the vehicle serviced a couple of weeks before setting off.

2 Make sure the spare tyre is in good condition and pack a second set of car keys.

3 Don't forget to pack a tool kit and a car jack.

4 Display a nationality plate at the rear of your vehicle, failure to do so could result in an on-the-spot fine.

5 Fit headlamp beam converters to the car so that the beams don't dazzle oncoming drivers. Don't forget to remove the converters on return to the UK.

6 Carry a warning triangle in the boot, this is a legal requirement in most European countries. In some countries motorists must also have a replacement bulb kit in the car.

7 Pack a first aid kit, just in case - and make sure it's easily accessible.

DOCUMENTS

For the Car:-

1 Take the European breakdown cover before you leave. AA research shows that approximately 40 per cent of people travel without it.

2 Carry your vehicle insurance and vehicle registration documents and display a current tax disc.

3 Motorists driving on Swiss motorways must buy motorway tax (this can be done through most AA shops).

For the motorist and passengers

1 Carry your passport, driving licence and international driving permit (if required in the countries being visited).

2 Remember to take ferry or Le Shuttle tickets, personal travel insurance documents, money, credit cards and maps.

During the Trip:-

1 Always remember to lock the vehicle whenever it is unattended.

2 Never leave money or valuable items in an unattended car and don't leave anything on display; remove all your property from the car if possible

3 Try and avoid parking in badly lit areas and if the car has an alarm fitted, don't forget to use it.
