IF you own an older car don't be lulled into a false sense of security by thinking that car thieves won't be interested in your vehicle, advises Colonnade Insurance Brokers.

Statistics show that car thieves are more interested in stealing older cars from the 1980's than fast new models.

Statistics reveal that cars manuactured in 1985 are the most susceptible to theft, with almost 3 per cent of cars from that year having been stolen over the last 12 months.

Manager Lynda Mealor at the Wallasey branch explains 'Many newer vehicles are equipped with factory fitted security systems which may still be overcome by determined thieves but may certainly help to deter them. Whatever the age of your car it's worth fitting a security device - most thieves are opportunists and if they see that your car is protected they will probably move on'.

If you make your car more secure, you can also benefit from lower insurance premiums. Car secruity devices such as alarms and immobilisers will attract discounts'.
