ATHLETICS by Christine Yavari

WIRRAL AC athlete Elizabeth Bowyer achieved a bronze medal at the AAA Under-20 Indoor Championships at Birmingham. Competing in the Under-17 Girls' shot, she claimed third place with a throw of 11m 44cm.

In the Under-17 Girls' 60m hurdles, Sian Polhill-Thomas came seventh in the final with a time of 9.18 secs, having won his heat in 9.09 secs. Pam Cooke was third in heat two and Kellie Smith fifth in heat three.

Ian Tinsley, in his first year as an Under-20, gave good performances in both the 800m and 400m - he came fourth in the 800m final, just missing out on a bronze medal with a time of 1 min 57.92 secs, having won his heat in a new personal best time of 1 min 55.92 secs. Meanwhile, in the 400m, Ian was placed third in his heat, qualifying for the 'B' final and finished second in a time of 49.64 secs.

Following from his achievements last year, in particular a bronze medal in the Inter Boys 400m at the English Schools' Championships, Ian was awarded a grant of £100 towards his athletic expenses from the Ron Pickering Memorial Fund. This gives grants to young athletes still in full time education to aid them with their expenses in pursuing their athletic aspirations.
