NINETY-four workers at Horizon Biscuits (formerly Premier Biscuits) are today celebrating the achievement of their City and Guilds NVQ qualification in Food and Drink Manufacturing Operations.
Phase One of the training and development programme began last April and followed extensive negotiation with the workforce and the establishment of a working partnership involving the TUC, T&G, Wirral Metropolitan College and the local Training & Enterprise Council - CEWTEC.
The T&G, officials of which were anxious to ensure equal opportunities to all employees, played an important part in shaping an employee led curriculum on-site.
In consultation with Wirral Met, the company established its own on-site learning centre - Gateway to Learning - designed to support those who were returning to learning, some for the first time in many years.
