WIRRAL Euro MP Lyndon Harrison voted this week for a big clean up of Britain that will improve quality of life in Wirral and Cheshire.

Said Mr Harrison: "I predict that within 10 years towns in Cheshire and Wirral will be cleaner, fewer children will suffer from asthma caused by car fumes and the whole town centre will be cleaner and a less smelly place for pedestrians and cyclists."

With the backing of the British Government, the new standards will have to be implemented in phases between the years 2000 and 2005.

Added the MEP: "Birkenhead will be a better place to live and work thanks to an ambitious plan by the European Union to cut exhaust fumes. The plan involves forcing motor manufacturers to make cleaner and more efficient engines and obliging oil companies to make cleaner petrol and diesel fuel."
