From D.V. Davies, Welfare Officer, Normandy Veterans' Association, Wirral and Chester Branch:-

REGARDING your article (Wirral Globe, February 4) about Clifford White, Secretary of the Burma Star Association Wirral Branch and the possible re-siting of war memorial plaques in Hamilton Square:-

I was at the meeting referred to, representing Wirral and Chester Branch of the Normandy Veterans' Association, of which I am Welfare Officer.

Every one of us stated, quite categorically, that we preferred the plaques to remain where they are now, but that if they had to be moved, what alternative sites were available?

Alternatives put forward were discussed, and the one voted on was regarded as the best available, and only on the basis that they have to be moved.

Clifford White did not agree. He is entitled to do that, and that is quite acceptable.

Myself and representatives of other Ex-Service associations have the utmost respect and admiration for Clifford and his Burma Star comrades, as I am sure they have for us. You are not alone in wishing the plaques to remain where they are, Clifford. I do not think you need worry about sacrilege as I believe they are not on consecrated ground.

Lindsay Price, Project Manager at the Hamilton Quarter, was most helpful, even offering to visit our respective associations to address the memberships, if so desired.
