HYUNDAI'S first foray into world championship tarmac rallying saw both entries claim top 10 class positions after almost trouble-free runs.

Scotland's Alister McRae finished seventh in the Formula 2 category and 19th overall on Spain's Catalunya rally after an incident free three days. Team leader Kenneth Ericsson was just one class position behind him and 21st overall, despite losing time with a slipping clutch.

The performance of the F2 Hyundai Coupes is a tremendous boost for the Korean company, whose cars were developed with Far Eastern gravel events in mind before a world championship programme was on the cards.

Motor Sport Developments (MSD), the Midlands company which prepares and runs the Hyundais, is currently developing a highly-modified car more suited to the varied demands of the World Rally Championship, and will be legalised for competition in July.
