EMMA POVALL of Claughton has been crowned Miss Wirral Globe 1998 after a glittering ceremony at the Pyramids, Birkenhead.

Nineteen-year-old Emma was chosen from the ten finalists to be our 'Queen of Hearts' and represent the Claire House children's hospice appeal. She also won a five-day holiday in France and other prizes, courtesy of Max Spielmann.

Said a delighted Emma: "I'm absolutely overwhelmed. I can't believe that I'won, it hasn't sunk in yet. I want to work for the children at Claire House and I'm honoured to represent them.

"I'd just like to thank my mum for entering me in the contest. I never dreamed that I could actually win it!"

Runner-up Lucinda Jones, 19, from Wallasey Village said: "I'm pleased to have got this far in the competition. I have enjoyed the night and made lots of new friends."

The Globe would like to thank the MC John Maddock and the judges. They were Mayor of Wirral Barney Gilfoyle, Radio Merseyside's Linda McDermott, Carla Bird, Graham Holden-Carter of Claire House, Jill Scarlett of Max Speilmann and Mel Glasby of the Pyramids.
