WIRRAL South MP Ben Chapman has confirmed his continuing fight to save Carlett Park college in Eastham despite a 'businesslike' meeting with Wirral Met College Principal, Jenny Shackleton.

Said Ben Chapman MP: "My meeting with Ms Shackleton was businesslike, but I remain implacably opposed to the closure of the Carlett Park site. Our discussions ranged over a number of issues surrounding the plans the College Board has for the site and about issues of governance.

"I remain convinced that the College Board are not fully aware of the weight of public concern. I have received a large postbag on the issue and the petition which I launched has already attracted nearly 5,000 signatures. A number of people have raised the issue of anonymity. If they write to me to express views and concerns on this issue, this would, of course, be observed.

"Notwithstanding the college's claim to the contrary, I have been approached by many students who have expressed deep concern about the plans to close the site.

"I informed Ms Shackleton of my intention to continue to fight to ensure that the college does not close and leave Eastham. It is a community resource which must remain and I believe there are strong educational reasons for its retention as well.

"I would urge people to write to me either at my Constituency Office, at 32 Bebington Road, New Ferry, or at the House of Commons and express their opinions on this issue.

"I have agreed to meet for further discussions with Ms Shackleton in the near future."
