From E. Bennett:- SO, former Councillor Gordon Lindsay recognised the 'undemocratic structure of further education governance' and wanted the council to enter into a dialogue with Wirral Metropolitan College so as to achieve the 'best provision in South Wirral' (Globe, April 22).

How hypocritical can you get? If Gordon Lindsay and his fellow Liberal Councillors really did want the best further education provision for all the people of Wirral why did he do nothing in his role as Chair of the College Board to defend first Withens Lane and now Carlett Park from closure?

Why, if he truly recognised the lack of accountability of the present further education structure, did he meekly support the College Principle, Jenny Shackleton, in her many attempts to allow both colleges to wither on the vine?

Surely he, as a representative of local people, should have been speaking out for the provision of further education in colleges that are close to the communities that they serve rather than supporting the construction of a White Elephant in Birkenhead.

As it is further education has all but been destroyed in Wirral by a board more interested in the excellence of buildings rather than excellence of education.
