THIS Saturday heralds the return of Wallasey Motor Clubs ever popular New Brighton Trophy Sprint to New Brighton promenade.

Held in association with Wirral Leisure Services & Tourism the motor sport event offers the unique experience of racing against the clock on one of the few closed road circuits in the country. Such is its popularity that this Saturday's event boasts a full 100 car line-up made up of cars from a wide and varied number of classes from all around the country. Despite the wide range of classes of car they will all have the same aim of getting around the one mile circuit in the quickest time possible and with timing to 1/100th of a second, you can be sure of closely fought battles for class wins as well as the ultimate prize of fastest time of the day.

Local interest comes in the form of a host of Wallasey Motor Club competitors including current North Western Championship leading contender Jon Sharples in his modified Sapphire Cosworth 4x4. Jon will be keen to put to bed last year's disasters when, fighting for a class victory he came to grief on one of the courses faster sections causing suspension damage to the car and in turn losing his class honours by 1/100th of a second.

Also flying the flag for Wallasey Motor Club will be John Stant and Steve Brooks, both of which could be in line for securing overall honours in their ultra quick single seater racing cars. John, a Greasby property developer has to be the favourite of the two, having considerable racing and rallying experience and with a second overall at one of last year's championship events could definitely be in with a chance for taking his home event. A keen clay pigeon shooter in his spare time, John says he has the years events in his sights.

The action starts on the day with timed practice from 9.30am to 12.30 pm, and the timed competitive runs starting at 12.30pm and finishing at around 5.30pm. Spectators are more than welcome and no charge will be made. However, those enthusiasts wishing to get closer to the action should contact Wallasey Motor Club's Chief Marshal, Harry Cabot on 648-1077 (before 9pm) and register as a Course Marshal. Previous experience is preferable but not essential as others will be on hand to help.
