A NEW breakdown emergency centre in Lyon, France has opened to help the thousands of British motorists who drive into trouble in Europe each year.

The Euro control centre will employ up to 200 multilingual operators from the AA and from five other European clubs. Using garage agents and individual clubs' breakdown patrols, they are able to dispatch help to AA members and motorists which AA continental breakdown cover.

The AA estimates that about 3 million drives a year now take their cars across the Channel. Their numbers will be swollen next month, when thousands of football fans visit France for the World Cup.
