Bank Holiday Cricket round-up by Andrew Stratton

CALDY'S hopes of lifting the Village National Knock-Out Cup for a third successive year were dashed, astonishingly, by local rivals Port Sunlight at the weekend.

Skipper Danny Gulliver set a fine example for Port Sunlight with 60 and they eventually had a five runs margin in a massive upset. Caldy were ruing conceding 18 runs with no balls which proved absolutely crucial.

Port Sunlight would love to go on and carry the Wirral hopes to Lord's at the end of the season, but face a massive task.

Caldy closed on 164-9 and Port Sunlight made 169-5.

Irby gained a first win of the season in the Bromborough Paints Merseyside Competition on Saturday at the expense of Caldy, who were well below par. The margin was eight wickets.

Port Sunlight drew at Cheshire Lines.

In Division Two, there were wins for Eastham Bromborough, Wirral, Parkonians and Parkfield, but defeats for Mersey Park, Birkenhead St Mary's and Tranmere Vics.

It was a happier story for Caldy, on Monday - they got home by 102 runs at Buckley. Pete Urwin took 6-10, Mark Rowan behind the wicket claimed four victims and Dave Aston took two wickets and hit 45.

Irby, at Cheshire Lines, and Port Sunlight, at home to Aigburth, hung on for draws.

In Division Two, Tranmere Vics celebrated their first win by four wickets over Mossley Hill. Peter Leatham scored 55 and Paul Hulmston took 7-59.

Eastham Bromborough lost at Wrexham and Wirral failed at home to Manweb.

The Mersey Park v Parkonians and Parkfield v Birkenhead St Mary's derbies were drawn. Martin Walker made an undefeated 67 for Mersey and Ian Pollitt 58, while for Parkonians Matthew Hutchinson was 88 not out and Dave Holdsworth contributed 62.

Phil Moore was 56 not out for Parkfield and Pete Williams for Birkenhead contributed 40.

Games involving local cricket clubs this Saturday include:-

Division One: Caldy v Rainhill; Irby v Buckley; Prescot Odyssey v Port Sunlight.

Division Two: Birkenhead St Mary's v Whitefield; Eastham Bromborough v Mersey Park; Nalgo v Tranmere Vics; Mossley Hill v Parkfield; Parkonians v Wirral.
