SWELTERING youngsters are putting lives at risk in the Noctorum area by vandalising fire hydrants so they can cool off in the resulting cascade of water.

And now Wirral Council and Merseyside Fire Brigade are warning that their pranks could cost lives and they are appealing to parents to keep a close eye on their children to put a stop to the damage.

Said station officer Mike Harris: "While the cool shower may be pleasant for the children, it could have a tragic result if fire hydrants they have damaged are needed in an emergency.

"Fire engines can only carry a limited quantity of water, and a ready supply of water is essential in an emergency.

"Whether they are needed in an emergency or not, the gushing hydrants are wasting precious water and affecting the water pressure. This could have terrible consequences. Patients on kidney dialysis are in great danger if their treatment is interrupted by a failed water supply.

"If anyone sees children tampering with the hydrants, please call the police immediately. You could save a life."
