INCREASING concerns about a looming skills shortage in the UK motor industry have resulted in the launch of a national recruitment and training campaign by fast growing vehicle importer and distributor, Chrysler Jeep Imports UK.

The company's entire 103-strong UK dealer network including Cubbin & North of Birkenhead, this month launches the Chrysler & Jeep Apprentice Scheme in an attempt to stave off an expected shortage of skilled technicians.

"We are keenly aware of a growing skills shortage," said Chrysler Jeep Imports UK Development Director, David Parkin. "In some parts of the country recruitment is difficult and experienced staff are being poached all the time.

"The Chrysler Jeep business is rated in the top three by UK car dealers, and if this company, which enjoys such a high reputation, sees difficulties ahead, then our views reveals just the tip of the iceberg facing the industry.

"There is no quick fix answer. What we can do is increase investment for the future to improve the situation through our own training scheme, leading to qualifications recognised throughout the industry," he said.

The traditional skills are of course required, but so are new skills such as electronics and computer fault diagnosis.

"Modern Chrysler and Jeep vehicles have sophisticated computer controlled engine management and complex transmission systems, including the latest four-wheel drive technology," said Parkin.

"Today's driver takes for granted an extremely high level of performance and reliability from a car and exceptional service from the dealer. Technicians in the service team of any car dealer have a key role to play in providing customer satisfaction."

In an attempt to break down out of date views in the industry, Chrysler Jeep Imports UK is setting up a programme of presentations to schools, and open evenings at dealers, to get the message across and launch its Apprentice Scheme.

The scheme has been put together with ReMit, the industry's leading training organisation, to offer youngsters aged between 16 and 21, a chance to gain hands-on experience, training and a recognised qualification.

Successful candidates will join a local Chrysler Jeep dealership to work with a qualified technician for on the job training. Attendance at a local technical college or training centre on a day release basis also forms part of the apprenticeship and leads to the award of an approved vocational qualification.
