Local Rugby Round-up with ANDREW STRATTON

OLDERSHAW won but Caldy and Birkenhead Park lost in North West One League matches at the weekend.

It was a first league reverse for Caldy against a strong Aldwinians side. Ian Cropper managed a penalty and a drop goal in a 6-29 scoreline.

Birkenhead Park had to settle for two penalties by Richard Farrell against West Park, but the 6-29 scoreline was somewhat harsh.

Oldershaw finished 22-14 to the good against Vagabonds in the Isle of Man. Willy Gardener scored a try, two conversions and a drop goal. Carl Porscke and Martin Sutton also touched down.

A Barry Knieveden penalty with the last kick climaxed a terrific fight back by Wallasey in a South Lancashire/Cheshire One derby at Wirral. Trailing 3-28 at the interval, Wallasey won 30-28. Knieveden also scored a try, two conversions and a first-half penalty. Phil Turner, Phil Thompson and Ben O'Donnell were the others to cross.

Andy Stretton, 2, John Morris and Patrick Granby went in for Wirral and Mike Beamish converted the lot.

Anselmians, after trailing 3-28 to Birchfield, just missed out in a terrific rally, losing 24-28. Ged McKenzie and Ronan Corbett gained tries. There was also a penalty touch down for persistent forward infringement, while Jamie Kimpton put over a penalty and three conversions.

In Division Two, there were defeats for Parkonians, 13-34 at Bowdon, and Prenton, 0-32 at Congleton. But Shell Stanlow were victorious at Marple.

Lee Parnell with a try, conversion and two penalties earned a tense 13-12 win for Port Sunlight over Collegiate in Division Three, but Hoylake failed 19-37 in the Isle of Man against Douglas.

Caldy, Birkenhead Park and Wallasey, who are all out of the NPI Cup, have a weekend off, but Aldershot have a club match at Leigh and Anselmians welcome a Chester XV.

In the Tetley Vase, Hoylake have a difficult trip to Bedians in round three. Port Sunlight have Moresby as visitors and Shell Stanlow entertain Sefton.

Cheshire Colts will be playing in the quarter finals of the Colts County Championship after finishing runners-up in the Northern group. They lost their final game 12-10 against Northumberland after leading 10-0 with just 20 minutes to play. Steve O'Connor kicked a penalty and added the goal to Andy Monaghan's try.

Yorkshire, whom Cheshire beat earlier in the season, won the group on points difference from Cheshire.

Cheshire are away to Oxfordshire on Sunday.
