NEW Brighton make the short journey to north Liverpool on Saturday to take on Waterloo in a much-awaited third round tie of the Tetley Bitter Cup.

But the Blundellsands club has been accused of "selfish elitism" by Colin Bentley, New Brighton's outspoken Commerical Manager - for not playing the tie on Sunday, as requested by the Wirral visitors.

Said Colin: "I think Waterloo are ruling out hundreds of local club players who would have loved to see this game. Alright, New Brighton are two leagues below Waterloo and should have no real chance of winning, but this is cup rugby and the tie has huge interest for Merseyside fans occupied with their own games on Saturday.

"It is a lamentable decision and I can't understand Waterloo's reasoning. They could and should have made arrangements for a Sunday game - I can only assume they continue to live in the past and have no real interest in opening rugby up to the ordinary Merseyside fans."
