WIRRAL COUNCIL wants to fly the flag for West Kirby Beach at Dee Lane.

Leisure and Tourism councillors agree with their director, Andy Worthington, that they apply for a European Blue Flag Award for the quality of its sand and water.

The Tidy Britain Group, which hands out the awards, suggests that West Kirby beach could reach the standard with 'relatively minor improvements'. No such awards exist in the North West at present. Funding has been identified from the Hoylake and West Kirby Improvement Programme.

The award would be valid for a year. The Tidy Britain Group has already visited the beach and liked what it saw but made some suggestions. These included improved notices, continued beach attention, plus signs about dog fouling and beach lifeguard operating times.
