Macclesfield .......................... 11pts, New Brighton ............................... 18 pts

by Colin Bentley

NEW Brighton face their moment of truth, on Saturday - they must beat visitors Kendal at Reeds Lane to keep alive hopes of promotion from Jewsons National League Two (kick-off 3pm).

New Brighton are in the Cheshire Cup Final after Sunday's 18-11 victory at Macclesfield. They now meet Chester, conquerors of Oldershaw, on a date to be arranged.

Macclesfield took the lead when Manion touched down for 5-0 after 10 minutes, but the conversion was missed.

Kennedy soon produced his magic and set up Rob Harman to touch down for 5-5, but the conversion was missed. Geoff Jones soon touched down to give the Blues a 10-5 half-time lead.

Macclesfield responded at the start of the second-half with a penalty only for Paul Brett to increase New Brighton's lead to 13-8 with a penalty.

Macclesfield kicked another penalty only for Ian Kennedy to score a try.

New Brighton deserved to win but made it difficult for themselves and in the bar after the game there was no sign of champagne. Nor should there have been . . .
