LOCAL RUGBY ROUND-UP by Andrew Stratton

OLDERSHAW crashed 6-55 against Aldwinians in a re-arranged North West One League clash.

Willy Gardner kicked two penalties, but the Wirral outfit lost their way entirely in the second-half.

Wirral lost 10-19 at Chester, but were far from disgraced. Lee Wakelan and Jeff Burgess gained tries. Prenton beat Hoylake 25-13 in a local derby. There were tries for Oliver Roberts, Mark Peers, Craig Elkerton and Paul Cotgrave. Steve Roberts added a conversion and a penalty. Alan Robinson and Dave Webb touched down for Hoylake and Richard Young landed a penalty. Anselmians fell 16-30 against Sefton. Chris Wells and Mark Williams crossed and the former targeted a brace of penalties.

Cheshire Under-21s beat Lancashire 27-6 at New Brighton to make sure of at least the runners-up spot in the Northern Group.

Cheshire began their defence of the Tetley Bitter County Championship with a convincing victory over Lancashire at Reeds Lane on Monday. It finished 23-7 and put Cheshire in good heart for their next match against Northumberland at Chester this Saturday.

The home county, with nine New Brighton players, were soon in control with three penalties by Steve Swindells. Tries followed from Simon Wright and Ian Kennedy, with Swindells goaling each time. Lancashire had to settle for a try and conversion.

"We have shown we are not going to give up our title of county champions easily," said delighted skipper Kevin Brookman afterwards.
