RESIDENTS in a normally quiet residential lane in Barnston have presented their MP Ben Chapman with a petition over speeding cars along Whitehouse Lane.

The Wirral South MP met householders and parents to hear their concern that motorists coming from the Chester Neston direction ignore the short 30mph limit stretch because once under the bridge they can put their foot down.

Protesters think that drivers late for Vauxhall's factory, Bromborough Industrial Park or Clatterbridge Hospital may be among culprits using Whitehouse Lane as a shortcut.

"Once you go under the bridge there are only two residential houses and an old farmhouse. I can't see all these motorists visiting there. My neighbours and I would be grateful for anything you can do with the police and Wirral Council to eradicate this ridiculous speeding," said spokesman Richard Ridgeway.

"Our petition states that there have been a number of accidents in recent years. There are young families with children in Whitehouse Lane. We do not want a serious or fatal accident!"

Residents in nearby Brooklet and Brunstath Close are giving their support as they have difficulty in getting out onto Whitehouse Lane.

Wirral Borough Engineers Department has taken a traffic count in Brimstage Village and contacted residents following an earlier complaint. Day-glow high conspicuous 30mph signs are to be put up plus SLOW road markings on a red background. A further speed and traffic survey will then be carried out.

However, residents remain concerned that there will soon be a serious, or fatal accident. They want something more done, sleeping policemen, a speed camera plus police action.
