A WALLASEY community awoke to mourning and tragedy on Good Friday morning. Teenager Neil Clewlow, of Seaview Avenue, Liscard, died after his car spun out of control just before 4am in Grove Road, Wallasey.

The crash demolished a corner sandstone boundary wall of a house in this busy road made up of houses, shops and a popular pub.

Easter Monday was Neil's 19th birthday and as the horror of the crash unfolded, the wall became a shrine to the young man.

Flowers and cards were placed, plus the latest Liverpool FC poster. Passing people and motorists stopped to spend a moment reflecting, or wondering what had happened.

The death scene contrasting dramatically on a sunny day with the rest of the street scene of people buying a paper or bedding plants from the corner shop.

Midday tipplers at the Nelson Pub, joggers, pedestrians, people walking their dogs, children on their way to the playing field - all stopped to look at the growing floral tribute.

Throughout the Easter holiday weekend, family, relatives and friends continued to lay flowers and place cards.

Police are appealing for witnesses. Neil was the only person in the car when the accident happened at 3.45am.

The force of the impact demolished the low, solid sandstone brick wall and the bang woke neighbouring residents. They said they heard a loud bang, some thought they were dreaming. Outside there was a nightmare. There was nothing that could be done for the young man as police and firemen attended the accident.

The neighbourhood maintained a sense of mourning over the Easter holiday. Yesterday Neil should have been getting over the night before birthday celebrations. Instead his family are arranging Neil's funeral
