A WIRRAL man, who was arrested when he revisited the scene of his crime, was convicted of attempting to rob another man at Eastham Rake station.

A Liverpool Crown Court jury found Paul Forbes guilty after a trial during which he admitted assaulting his victim but denied demanding money from him.

The court heard that ironically when police went to the station the next day and watched a security video of the incident they spotted him again at the station and arrested him.

Forbes, 18, of Larch Road, Birkenhead, was remanded in custody until April 14 to enable a pre-sentence report to be prepared.

Judge Bryn Holloway told Forbes, who has numerous previous convictions, that he would be going to detention for "quite a long time".

During the trial Mr Anthony O'Donoghoe, prosecuting, said that the incident occurred on the evening of September 5 after Neil Thorpe arrived to catch a train home to Liverpool.

Forbes and another young man shouted obscenities at him and when Mr Thorpe went to telephone his father, having discovered the last train had gone, they again approached him.

Forbes repeatedly threatened to hit him unless he handed over his money and when he refused Forbes punched him about three times.

The two men then fled empty-handed and Forbes was arrested the next day.

When questioned claimed he had acted in self-defence.
