Pyke Cup glory puts Lairds on way to 'double'
CAMMELL Laird completed the first part of their quest for a league and cup double in the Carlsberg West Cheshire League, on Bank Holiday Monday, when they beat Ashville 4-0 to lift the Pyke Cup. Joe Kearns, Jimmy Blackhurst, Colin Littlejohn and Paul Conboy were the scorers.
With Division One leaders Heswall having completed their programme, Cammell Laird had a spoke put in the wheels of their championship seeking run when they lost 2-1 to bottom club Bromborough Pool. But they recovered to beat Mond Rangers 2-1, with Neil Larkin and Faddi Hanna, on target and need three points from their remaining two games to clinch the title.
Strikes by Steve Walsh and Lee O'Brien delivered a 2-0 win for Newton at Christleton which ensured their first division safety. Bromborough Pool went down midweek 2-0 to Poulton Victoria (Simon Lewis and Mike O'Shaughnessy).
Heswall Reserves are Division Two Champions, after a 2-1 win over New Brighton. Steve Cross and Julian Pepper were on target.
Cammell Laird Reserves (Gary Reay, 3, Phil Hughes, 2) overcame Poulton Vics Reserves 5-2.
In Division Three, Manor Athletic (Paul Sanderson, 2, Graham Corvell) became the first side to register three league goals against promoted Aintree Villa.
