THE RSPCA's Wirral animal home reopened its doors to animals in need on Tuesday following major rebuilding work.

The centre, in Cross Lane, Wallasey, has been closed to allow new staff accommodation to be built on site.

RSPCA Wirral branch secretary Les Gunn said: "It's essential that we have a manager and deputy manager both living on site to provide around-the-clock cover. The previous manager and deputy were a mother and daughter who lived on site.

"When they left, it became necessary to provide additional accommodation and, as other refurbishment work was also needed, the decision was taken to temporarily close the centre."

Two new staff bungalows have been built on site and work has just begun on a brand new kennel block for 34 dogs. The existing kennels will continue to be used until the new block is completed in September. A new building for miscellaneous animals will then be constructed.

Mr Gunn said: "It has taken a long time and a lot of hard work, but now we just can't wait to get back to business finding caring homes for animals who have been abandoned, mistreated or who are just unwanted."

The animal centre will be open to the public between 11am and 4pm every day except Thursday and can be contacted during opening hours on 638-6318.

The branch is keen to recruit volunteers to help out in the animal centre and with fund-raising. Anyone who is interested in helping should ring the centre.
