OPERATION CRYSTAL. New Brighton and parts of Birkenhead may be covered by a new bye-law prohibiting consumption of alcohol in public places.

Wirral councillors meet this week to respond to Merseyside Police's view that such a law should be restricted to problem drinking areas in New Brighton and Birkenhead.

Night clubs and pubs in the Victoria Road and Marine Promenade area would be covered by the ban on drinking in the streets because pub and clubgoers tend to gather there. The clubs close in the early hours and there have been complaints from residents of rowdy scenes.

Police confirm that alchohol-related problems, especially those involving young people in New Brighton, are aggravated by the culprits carrying bottles and glasses.

The bye-law would have to be advertised and approved, then clear signs put up. Councillors are also considering a report on serious assaults in New Brighton from last Summer up to the Christmas festive season.

They involve people being struck with bottles, or glasses when the clubs shut in the early hours of the morning and happen mostly in the Marine Promenade, Victoria Road and Rowson Street areas of New Brighton.
