PROTON has released the official picture of its new high performance GTi model to coincide with the opening of a £62.5 million vehicle design and development facility at its manufacturing plant in Malaysia.

Stunning to look at and with performance to match, the new three-door hatch is being readied by Proton for a serious assault later this year on a market so far dominated by European contenders.

With a ride and handling package developed at the new R&D facility in conjunction with Lotus, the sports car and engineering company owned by Proton, the GTi is expected to set new standards of handling, performance and driver appeal at an affordable price when it reaches the UK.

Powered by a 1.8-litre twin cam 16 valve engine, the new car is capable of 0-60mph in around 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 130mph. Uprated braking system with electronic ABS, 16 inch six spoke alloy wheels, Recaro sports seats and titanIum effect dash panel head a long list of standard features.
