A WIRRAL couple are recovering this week after a bus crash in Turkey left them teetering on the edge of a cliff just inches from a fatal fall.
Michael Sullivan, from Meols, and Jane Hughes, of Hoylake, suffered their terrifying ordeal when they were on their way back to Dalaman airport after a holiday in the sun.
Their driver lost control of the bus in a collision with a minibus, leaving the vehicle hanging over a mountain ravine.
Said Mr Sullivan: "It was beyond terrifying, we were so scared. We were just hanging there on the edge of the cliff. We were stuck for more than 40 minutes before help came."
The passengers were forced to wait for a passing truck driver to secure the bus with a rope which he then tied around a tree. But they still could not escape as the emergency exit faced the cliff edge.
Luckily, another passer-by smashed one of the rear windows with a rock and the passengers scrambled to safety.
Mr Sullivan has injured his back and both are being treated for stress. "We have both been more affected mentally than physically. We are deeply stressed. It may take us quite a while to get over the shock," said Mr Sullivan.
The Turkish Police and tour operator First Choice are launching an inquiry into the crash.
