From 'Cyclist':-
MY husband and I have walked and cycled on the Wirral Way for more than 20 years.
Recently, we cycled from Thurstaston to West Kirby.
Three times we came off the cycle path and onto the pedestrian path - once because of a long stretch of deep mud and puddles (slippery on a bike), once because the path had narrowed and was badly overgrown by nettles (not much fun in shorts), and the third time because it would have meant cycling through great mounds of horse droppings.
Even where the cycle path was clear, the deeply rutted surface, hard packed by horses, was an unpleasant ride!
On several stretches, the Wirral Way is shared by walkers, cyclists and horses.
I don't know what this endless fuss about the 'proper' path is all about.
