CALDY, itching to repeat their success at Lord's two years ago, face a big test this weekend, when they travel to Elvaston, Derbyshire, in the quarter-finals of this season's Village National Knock-Out Cup.

The Derby club, like Caldy, are past winners and it could be a close call this time.

Meanwhile, Caldy continue to make the pace at the head of the Bromborough Paints Merseyside Competition.

Their latest game against St Asaph brought a 32 runs success.

Peter Urwin claimed 7-52 and the batsmen to shine were Phil Eymond, 68, and Richard Farrall, 73 not out.

Irby won the local derby against Parkonians by eight wickets. Matthew Hutchinson top scored with 76 for Parkonians. Ian Johnson claimed 8-46 for Irby and Dave Newman hit an unbeaten half century.

Port Sunlight lost by 10 wickets after being dismissed for 102 at Runcorn.

Parkfield stay top of Division Two after a five wickets home win over Eastham Bromborough. Rich Cotton was the bowling star with 7-42.

Wirral Mersey Park won the derby at Birkenhead St Mary's by six wickets. Dave Devling finished with 6-26 and Martin Walker struck 44. Andy Gibson contributed 60 for the losers.

Tranmere Vics just held on for a draw at Xaverians. Their last pair were together with 20 runs still wanted.

Division Two: Birkenhead St Mary's 152, Wirral Mersey Park 156-4; Xaverians 158-3 declared, Tranmere Vics 138-9; Parkfield 78-5, Eastham Bromborough 77.

Saturday's Division One games include Irby v Aigburth, Parkonians v St Mary's College, Port Sunlight v Prestatyn and Sutton v Caldy.

In Division Two, Eastham Bromborough entertain Birkenhead St Mary's, Tranmere Vics welcome Whitefield and Wirral Mersey Park are at home to Wrexham. Parkfield face a key game at Nalgo.

Caldy last Sunday lost interest in the Kaufman Memorial Trophy at the quarter-final stage by the cruellest of margins. They closed on 184-8 against Wavertree, who had hit 184-6 and edged it through losing less wickets.

The Wirral League Phil Daniels Cup Final at Wirral on Sunday was won by Castrol by 44 runs against Liscard Central. Darren Green, 79, and Mark Evans, 41, were top batsmen for Castrol, who made 210-5 and restricted the opposition to 166-7.
