ATHLETE Victoria McConnell is taking the fast track to making quite a name for herself as a rising sports all-rounder.

Vicky had the distinction of finishing the highest placed Wirral competitor at the recent Wirral Mini Triathlon - her first-ever attempt at the sport.

Fourteen-year-old Vicky, who lives in Wallasey, finished second in the top 14-15 year age group. The novice was beaten only by one 15-year-old experienced competitor from Yorkshire. Vicky completed the 300m swim, 5000m cycle ride over rough grass and 2000m run in an exceptional time of 30 minutes.

She will now be competing in the National Triathlon Championships next year.

A member of Wallasey Swimming Club for six years, Vicky has already won two Lancashire Championships this year and next week competes in the swimming nationals in Coventry.

She is also hoping to help her school swimming team - Weatherhead High - to success early in the new Millennium in a national schools' swimming competition at Crystal Palace.
